A Major Setback for Anthony Santander and the Blue Jays
It's a tough blow for the Toronto Blue Jays as their outfielder, Anthony Santander, is set to undergo left labral surgery, keeping him out of action for the next five to six months. This news comes as a shock to many, especially after Santander's impressive performance with the Orioles, where he slugged 44 home runs and earned Silver Slugger honors.
Santander, a 31-year-old switch-hitter, had a challenging first year with the Blue Jays. He managed just 59 games, including the playoffs, due to a left shoulder inflammation that cost him two months. A back injury further derailed his season, forcing him off the ALCS roster. Despite these setbacks, the Blue Jays showed faith in Santander, signing him to a five-year, $92.5MM deal.
But here's where it gets controversial... Santander's performance at the plate left much to be desired. His batting average of .175 and slugging percentage of .294 were a far cry from his career campaign with the Orioles. This raises questions about whether Santander's struggles were due to injury or a decline in performance.
And this is the part most people miss... Santander's defensive abilities have also been a topic of discussion. He's been graded as an average to below-average defender in recent years, with metrics like Outs Above Average and Defensive Runs Saved giving him mixed reviews. The Blue Jays utilized him in both the outfield and as a designated hitter last season, with a brief appearance at first base.
With Santander's injury, the Blue Jays' general manager, Ross Atkins, has stated that the club is not actively pursuing an outfielder replacement. The current roster has Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes penciled in as corner outfielders against right-handed pitching, while Davis Schneider and Myles Straw will handle left-handed pitching and late-inning defensive duties, respectively. George Springer is set to take on DH responsibilities.
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic and Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet were among the first to report Santander's injury and the club's response. The news has left fans and analysts alike wondering about the Blue Jays' strategy moving forward and whether they should consider a more significant outfield addition.
What do you think? Is Santander's injury a significant loss for the Blue Jays? Should they be more active in the outfield market? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
