Bold opening: A student’s sudden death prompts an abrupt shutdown of a Battle Creek school, as the district moves to support the community in the wake of tragedy.
A Battle Creek school will remain closed on Tuesday after a student suffered a fatal medical event during class, according to the Battle Creek Public Schools district. The incident occurred Monday during a physical education lesson at Northwestern Academy of Visual & Performing Arts. The student was transported to a hospital but did not survive. The district has not released the student’s name.
Northwestern Academy of Visual & Performing Arts will be closed for the day. Counseling and support staff will be on site to assist students, staff, and families. Drop-in sessions are available from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and lunch will be served from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., per district guidance.
"We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our condolences to the family, as well as to our students, staff, and community," a district spokesperson said in a written statement.
All other Battle Creek Public Schools remain open on Tuesday.
