The Magic: The Gathering World Championship has been abuzz with the rise of a new, otter-based deck that's sweeping through Standard. The deck, known as 'Temur Otters', has secured two spots in the top eight, making it the second most popular archetype among high-ranking players. At the heart of this otter offensive is an infinite combo that can close out games with a flood of furry, semiaquatic mammals. But here's the twist: it's not just the otters themselves that are doing the damage, it's a clever interplay of cards that can generate an endless supply of powerful creatures.
The combo relies on a clever dance between two key cards: Stormchaser's Talent and Boomerang Basics. Stormchaser's Talent can be bounced by Boomerang Basics, drawing a card and setting the stage for the next move. Then, Stormchaser's Talent can be replayed and leveled up, returning Boomerang Basics to your hand. You can then cast Boomerang Basics again, repeating the sequence and generating an infinite supply of otters with prowess and providing an infinite card draw. But here's where it gets controversial: this loop costs 6 mana every time you repeat it, which might seem like a deal-breaker.
However, with a few additional cards in your deck, you can generate all the mana you need. The key to this is Enduring Vitality, which allows you to tap your creatures to generate mana. If you also have a Badgermole Cub in play, it will permit your creatures to generate an additional green when you use them to make mana. And that's not all - Valley Floodcaller is a must-have. This card not only untaps all your mana dorks (as long as they are the right creature type) but also provides a wide-ranging +1/+1 buff whenever you cast a noncreature spell. So, every time you repeat the loop, you're not just generating mana, you're also buffing up your board.
But is this the most reliable infinite combo in the world? Not exactly. There are a lot of moving parts here that can be disrupted or destroyed.
