Epic Pancake Challenge at Seiad Valley Cafe | PCT Thru-Hike Adventure (2026)

Today's a special day on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) as we celebrate Birdman's birthday! A thoughtful banner, strung between the trees, greeted him as he woke up, a wonderful surprise from his trail family.

Our morning walk to Seiad Valley was a brisk 6 miles, and I must admit, I felt quite sprightly, overtaking my friends who had left earlier. Little did I know, a wasp had other plans for me. As I walked with Drom, Radio, and Little Wagon, a wasp bit my ankle through my sock, bringing tears to my eyes. It was a painful reminder that nature can be unforgiving.

Seiad Valley Cafe, a renowned stop for hikers, offered a unique challenge - the Pancake Challenge. Posh Spice, ever adventurous, decided to take it on. The stack of pancakes that arrived was a sight to behold, bigger than his head! It was a true spectacle, with the entire cafe full of hikers gathering to witness and document this feat.

Posh Spice tackled the first pancake with determination, finishing it within 20 minutes. But the second pancake proved to be a challenge, and unfortunately, Posh had to call it quits. Those pancakes were dense, and I can't blame him for not completing the challenge. It's a testament to the difficulty of the task.

After resupplying at the general store, we sat outside the cafe, digesting our meals. I opted for a refreshing Gatorade and an It's It ice cream sandwich to beat the heat. The climb out of Seiad Valley is notorious for its brutality, with reports of blowdowns, no water sources, and a trail that dips and climbs, gaining and losing elevation. However, an alternative road walk offered a more pleasant experience, following a creek, abundant with blackberries, and even a waterfall and swimming hole.

I chose the road walk, joining Posh and a new hiking companion, Yoshi. It was a glorious walk, filled with nature's bounty. We feasted on blackberries, cooled off in the swimming hole, and filled our water bottles at the waterfall. It was a welcome break from the challenging trail.

As the sun began to set, we continued our climb, and to my surprise, I found the golden hour hike quite enjoyable. The cooler temperatures and the beautiful sunset made for a pleasant experience. We made good time, and the next couple of days into Ashland look promising, a much-needed respite after some tough trail days.

In my opinion, these little detours and challenges along the PCT add a layer of adventure and community to the hiking experience. It's these shared moments that create lasting memories and strengthen the bonds between hikers. The Pancake Challenge, for instance, became a memorable event, bringing hikers together to witness and support each other.

What many people don't realize is that these challenges, like the Pancake Challenge, are not just about the food or the accomplishment. They are a testament to the resilience and camaraderie of the hiking community. It's a unique culture, where hikers support and celebrate each other's achievements, no matter how big or small.

As we continue our journey, I look forward to more of these unexpected adventures and the stories they'll create. The PCT is not just a trail, it's a journey of discovery, both of the landscape and of the incredible people we meet along the way.
