Flu Season Alert: Protect Yourself and Your Family (2026)

Are you ready to dive into the world of respiratory health? It's time to talk about something that affects us all: the flu. But here's where it gets controversial... While many believe the flu is just a minor inconvenience, the truth is, it can be a serious illness, especially for high-risk individuals. So, let's explore the latest news and learn how to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Communities across Cape York, Torres Strait, and the Northern Peninsula Area are being urged to take precautions as influenza cases spike. According to Dr. Helen Pedgrift, Public Health Medical Officer at Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service, various respiratory diseases, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19, are currently circulating. The good news is, there are simple steps we can take to prevent the spread of these illnesses. Good hygiene is key! Always wash your hands, use sanitiser, cover your coughs, put tissues straight in the bin, and stay away from others if you or they are sick. But what if you or a family member gets sick? If you have the flu, it's important to stay home and rest until symptoms have resolved, which is usually five to seven days. If symptoms worsen, seek medical attention early, especially if you have other chronic conditions. Antivirals are only effective if started early, within the first couple of days of symptoms. Now, let's talk about the flu vaccine. Vaccination is the best protection against many respiratory conditions, and the new seasonal influenza vaccination will become available from 1 March. Everyone should ensure they and their children receive the vaccination for maximum protection. The vaccine is free for all Queensland residents, and this year, there's also a needle-free nasal spray flu vaccine available for children aged two to five years. Young people, in particular, play a crucial role in getting vaccinated as they are more likely to spread infections. Remember, you need to be vaccinated every year to stay protected, as flu strains change annually. When the new seasonal flu vaccine is released, it will be available at GPs, pharmacies, and primary health centers across the region. But that's not all! Dr. Pedgrift also encourages all residents to ensure their COVID-19 booster vaccinations are up to date. So, are you ready to take control of your respiratory health? Stay tuned for more updates and tips on how to stay healthy during flu season. And don't forget to share your thoughts in the comments below!
