Free RSV Vaccine for WA Aged Care Residents: What It Means for Winter 2026 (2026)

A crucial step towards protecting our vulnerable communities: Western Australia's bold move to offer free RSV flu vaccines to aged care residents.

In the wake of a devastating flu season last year, Western Australia is taking proactive measures to shield its older residents from the highly contagious Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). This virus, often overlooked, can cause severe infections in older adults and babies, and now, for the first time, those aged 65 and above in residential care will have access to free vaccinations.

But here's where it gets controversial... while mothers and babies have long been entitled to free RSV vaccinations, this expansion to include older adults is a game-changer. With over 12,000 cases recorded in WA in 2025, a third of which affected those over 65, the need for this initiative is clear.

Preventative Health Minister Sabine Winton emphasizes the importance of this program, stating, "RSV is highly contagious and can be especially dangerous for older people with pre-existing health conditions."

The high cost of vaccines privately - up to $300 - makes this free program a significant relief for aged care facilities and their residents. Russell Bricknell, chief executive of Juniper aged care provider, highlights the impact this will have on the wellbeing of elderly residents, saving facilities hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process.

And this is the part most people miss... the RSV vaccine rollout is not just about individual protection; it's about easing the strain on our healthcare system. With the potential to prevent thousands of hospital visits, this initiative is a crucial part of WA's winter strategy, aiming to keep emergency departments from becoming overwhelmed.

The Royal Australian College of GPs chair, Dr. Ramya Raman, applauds this move, recognizing its potential to alleviate pressure on hospitals, especially during the busiest times of the year.

With the worst winter on record in 2025, when over 35,000 flu cases were reported, and ambulances spending thousands of hours ramped outside hospitals, this vaccine rollout is a much-needed measure to prevent a repeat of such a devastating season.

Juniper aged care provider will begin its annual vaccination program in March, leading the way in protecting our vulnerable communities.

So, what do you think? Is this a step in the right direction for healthcare in Western Australia? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
