A cyberattack on the email servers of the French interior ministry has compromised more than twenty files, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, who described the incident as more serious than initially believed.
Earlier, on December 12, Nunez had said there was no clear sign of a serious breach. He reiterated on Franceinfo radio that the current assessment confirms compromises occurred, but the full extent remains unknown.
Among the affected materials were criminal records. There is, at present, no attribution of responsibility for the attack.
Minister Nunez stated that judicial and administrative investigations are underway, and the incident has been reported to the National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties (CNIL).
He emphasized caution, noting that while there have not, as of this morning, been millions of data items extracted, the level of compromise cannot yet be fully determined.
