A homecoming nearly 15 years in the making: James McClean returns to Derry City!
Derry City fans, rejoice! The club is thrilled to announce the signing of James McClean, a move that sees the star return to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium after a successful stint with Wrexham. This multi-year deal marks a significant moment, bringing back a player who has etched his name into the annals of football history.
McClean, at 36 years old, is more than just a returning player; he's a legend. Having left Derry City nearly 15 years ago to join Sunderland, he's become one of the most celebrated exports from the League of Ireland. His impressive career includes almost 600 appearances in England and over 100 caps for the Republic of Ireland – a testament to his skill and dedication.
His journey with Derry City began in July 2008, marked by a goal in a League Cup victory against Bohemians. He quickly became a key player, helping the team secure promotion to the top flight in 2010 with 8 goals. His outstanding performance continued into the Premier Division, catching the eye of Sunderland, who signed him in August 2011. During his first spell with the Candystripes, McClean played 88 times, scoring 18 goals.
His impact in England was immediate. He made his Premier League debut in December 2011 and was named Sunderland's Young Player of the Year for the 2011-12 season. He later moved to Wigan, where he made 86 appearances and was named Player of the Year in the 2014-15 season. A move to West Brom saw him feature over 100 times, followed by a stint at Stoke City, where he was again voted Player of the Year in the 19-20 season. He then returned to Wigan, helping them win promotion back to the Championship and earning a spot in the EFL Team of the Year.
McClean's recent contribution to Wrexham's success has been noteworthy, playing a central role in their back-to-back promotions. He was even named Club Captain last summer. This season, he played 19 times for the Welsh side before deciding to return home.
But here's where it gets controversial... His international career is equally impressive. He's one of the few players to reach a century of caps for the Republic of Ireland. He made his international debut in February 2012 against Czechia and played in both Euro 2012 and Euro 2016. He's also scored crucial goals for the Boys in Green, including match-winners against Austria and Vienna.
Despite being away for over a decade, McClean has remained a dedicated supporter of Derry City, attending games both at home and on the road. His return is a dream come true, as he stated, "It is no secret what this club means to me, it was always the plan to come home." He expressed his excitement and gratitude towards Wrexham for facilitating his return, emphasizing that this is where he intends to end his career.
City boss Tiernan Lynch is equally thrilled to have McClean back. He highlighted McClean's passion for the club and the city, emphasizing the experience and discipline he will bring to the team. Lynch believes McClean's presence will elevate the team's performance.
And this is the part most people miss...
