Breaking the stigma: How flower arranging is helping Garstang men open up about their mental health.
In a bold move to tackle the taboo surrounding men's mental health, two Lancashire businesses have come together to create an innovative and supportive space. Imagine a room filled with flowers and men, an unlikely combination that's breaking barriers and changing lives.
Bluebells and Daisies, a local florist, teamed up with Andy's Man Club, a charity dedicated to men's mental health, to host an event at 19 Kitchen and Bar. The idea? To engage men in an activity that might seem unconventional - flower arranging - and use it as a catalyst for open conversations about their well-being.
"Blokes are more likely to open up to strangers than their close friends," explains Rob Dobson from Andy's Man Club. "Events like these create a safe, judgment-free zone where men can express themselves freely."
And the impact? Dobson believes it's "huge." He emphasizes, "We're not professionals, just like-minded guys offering a space for others to talk."
David Chambers, a Garstang resident, attended the event seeking a chance to connect and perhaps gain some insight. He shares, "Talking to strangers can be easier sometimes. They don't know your background, so it's a fresh perspective."
Gemma Kelsall, the florist owner, was overwhelmed by the turnout. "We expected a struggle, but the men came willingly."
Declan Stephen agrees, "Garstang needed this. It's fantastic to collaborate and spread positivity."
Stuart Leatherbarrow's story is powerful. He initially had reservations about the class but found the interactive nature engaging. "Mental health is a journey, and for me, getting out and seeking help was key."
He adds, "There's pressure on men to talk, but someone needs to listen."
So, is flower arranging the new therapy? Perhaps it's a unique way to start conversations and provide support. As Stuart jokes about his creation, "I might just give this stunning bouquet to my wife!"
