Prepare to have your perception of truth challenged! A new Maltese play, 'Press Mute,' is set to premiere next month, promising a raw, unfiltered look at the media's struggle in today's chaotic world. This isn't just a play; it's a deep dive into the heart of modern journalism, where facts often get lost in the noise of sensationalism and social media outrage.
Inspired by 'live journalism,' the production aims to expose the real-life processes behind news stories. But here's where it gets controversial: 'Press Mute' fearlessly tackles the complex relationship between the media and the rising influence of artificial intelligence (AI), algorithms, and podcasters.
The play boasts a stellar cast of recognizable Maltese actors, including Michela Farrugia and Davide Tucci, alongside journalist Mark Laurence Zammit and media personality Trudy Kerr. Written and directed by Times of Malta editor-in-chief Herman Grech, and commissioned by Udjenza, the play will be staged at Spazju Kreattiv.
Set primarily in a struggling newsroom, the play invites audiences to question how news stories are crafted and how they are consumed. The production combines live action, multimedia, and audience interaction, asking a critical question: when outrage becomes entertainment, who controls the narrative?
Grech emphasizes the play's mission to expose the dangers of clickbait and AI through satire and dark humor. He believes theater has the unique "power to tell stories beyond the news headlines." He wants the audience to leave the theater questioning how their own actions impact the survival of facts in an increasingly complex media landscape.
The backdrop of the play is global media instability, where AI content, YouTube channels, influencers, and podcasters are taking up more space. In the US, the rise of online personalities has significantly impacted the media landscape, with thousands of influencers applying for press credentials. Closer to home, podcasters and social media personalities are playing a more active role in the daily news cycle.
And this is the part most people miss: Trust in mainstream media is waning globally, with right-wing and populist political parties capitalizing on this shift.
Mark Laurence Zammit, who plays a news editor in the production, offers a candid perspective. He states the play reveals "the unglamorous part of the job" and the frustrations of uncovering a story. He believes it will help people empathize with journalists and understand their experiences.
Pre-release controversy: The play has already stirred up controversy. Valletta Cultural Agency chairman Jason Micallef alleged that Times of Malta received state funding for the production. However, Udjenza clarified that they, not Times of Malta, were the beneficiaries, and the play's theme was chosen to address modern issues.
Udjenza aims to explore diverse themes, including homelessness and trans issues, highlighting the desire to connect with real stories. The play's theme is in line with the company’s desire to tackle modern themes.
'Press Mute' opens on February 20, with six performances until March 1.
