Witnessing the rare Risso's and pantropical spotted dolphins off Port Macquarie's coast was a photographer's dream come true. Jodie Lowe, an experienced ocean wildlife photographer, embarked on a pelagic birdwatching tour in late January, where she encountered two distinct dolphin species. The first surprise came in the form of two pods of Risso's dolphins, characterized by their large, round heads and distinct lack of beaks. These dolphins, up to 4 meters long and weighing 500 kilograms, showcased their social nature through the scars on their bodies, indicating interactions and conflicts within their species. Lowe's keen eye for detail noticed the Risso's dolphins' unique features, including their dark grey skin adorned with squiggly white marks, which become more pronounced with age. The second encounter was with a pod of pantropical spotted dolphins, smaller at around 2.6 meters and 120 kilograms, but equally fascinating. These dolphins, as they age, develop a spotted pattern across their bodies. The tour group's journey to 1,000-meter depths revealed the diverse marine life in deeper waters, a stark contrast to the coastal and intertidal zones where most familiar marine animals reside. The experience highlighted the importance of citizen science, as sightings and photographs of these rare dolphins contribute valuable data for scientific research. Vanessa Pirotta, a wildlife scientist, emphasized the significance of such observations, stating that any sighting is beneficial for understanding the diversity of cetaceans in Australian waters, where knowledge remains limited.
