In a striking turn of events, the San Jose Sharks, a team on the rise after an exhilarating series of comeback victories, are now facing a significant setback. They will be without two key offensive players, Will Smith and Philipp Kurashev, for at least the remainder of this week and potentially even longer.
On Monday, the Sharks announced that both forwards had been placed on injured reserve, meaning they will miss the upcoming three-game homestand. This series begins Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames, heightening the stakes for a team looking to build on its recent momentum.
Both Smith and Kurashev sustained injuries during Saturday’s thrilling game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, where the Sharks completed a remarkable 6-5 comeback win in overtime, marking a successful end to their five-game road trip. Kurashev, age 26, suffered his injury midway through the second period when he collided hard with the end boards in the Penguins' zone. He initially skated to the Sharks’ bench but soon made his way to the locker room for further evaluation.
Smith, a younger player at just 20 years old, was injured with 16:30 remaining in the third period after being bumped into the boards by defenseman Parker Wotherspoon. Clearly in pain, Smith immediately began skating off the ice, discarding one of his gloves while clutching his right arm. This prompted a brief altercation as teammates Macklin Celebrini and William Eklund confronted Wotherspoon in defense of Smith.
The absence of Smith and Kurashev is expected to significantly impact the Sharks' already fluctuating offense. Smith has been instrumental in the team's performance, currently ranking as their second-highest scorer with 29 points in 33 games. Notably, he has accumulated an impressive 20 points over the last 23 games since the Sharks found their footing following a rocky start of 2-6-2 earlier in the season.
Kurashev, for his part, has also made notable contributions, tallying 15 points in 31 games, surpassing his previous season's performance of 14 points over 51 games with the Chicago Blackhawks. Both players were integral to the Sharks’ top line alongside Celebrini, who leads the team with a remarkable 47 points in 33 games.
In terms of ice time, Smith ranks fourth among all Sharks forwards, averaging nearly 18 minutes per game, while Kurashev follows closely behind in fifth place with just over 16 minutes. Both players have played vital roles on the power play, with Smith on the first unit and Kurashev typically on the second.
In light of these injuries, the Sharks have called up forwards Igor Chernyshov and Ethan Cardwell from their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda, to help fill the void. The Sharks will kick off their three-game homestand on Tuesday against the Flames, followed by matchups against the Dallas Stars on Thursday and the Seattle Kraken on Saturday.
