Sources close to President Trump reveal a surprising lack of a concrete plan for Venezuela's future post-Maduro. After the dramatic capture of Nicolás Maduro, the US finds itself in a unique position of power, but with no clear roadmap ahead.
"There is no blueprint, no plan for what comes next," an insider shared. This admission raises questions about the administration's ability to navigate the complex transition to democracy in Venezuela.
The former leader's appearance in a Manhattan court on narco-terrorism charges has further complicated matters. Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's vice-president, now sworn in as president, has sent mixed signals, first defiant, then open to US cooperation.
And this is the part most people miss: there's a significant divide between Trump and his top foreign policy official, Marco Rubio. Rubio, the Secretary of State, has a different vision, emphasizing sanctions and control over oil tankers to exert influence.
"That remains in place... until we see changes... for the people of Venezuela," Rubio stated. But is this approach sustainable, or does it risk creating another quagmire like Iraq or Afghanistan?
Trump's statement, "We are going to run the country until we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition," seems to contradict Rubio's strategy. It's a confusing picture, leaving experts and regional analysts wondering about the details of this transition.
"The duration, benchmarks, and outcome are all unclear," Laurel Rapp, director of the US and North America programme at Chatham House, noted. "Trump and Rubio's language hints at limited planning."
So, is this lack of a detailed plan a strength or a weakness? Some senior Trump figures see it as a strength, a reflection of Trump's rapid decision-making style. But others, like Gregg Nunziata, a Republican aide, argue that competing justifications for action muddy the waters.
"The lack of a coherent explanation and conflicting justifications raise questions about strategy and confusion within the administration," Nunziata told The Telegraph.
