An ancient bird, Chromeornis funkyi, met its unfortunate end by swallowing over 800 tiny stones, leading to its suffocation. This discovery, made by paleontologists at the Field Museum, has sparked curiosity and debate within the scientific community. The story begins with a curious fossil, found alongside a collection of old bird fossils at the Shandong Tianyu Museum of Nature in China. It was initially mistaken for a new species of bird, resembling the Longipteryx, but a closer examination revealed something extraordinary.
Under a microscope, researchers uncovered a peculiar mass of stones within the bird's esophagus, near its neck bones. This finding suggested that the bird had indeed swallowed these stones, rather than them accumulating during the fossilization process. While birds swallowing rocks is not uncommon, this particular case raised eyebrows due to the sheer number of stones involved. Owls and chickens, for instance, consume rocks to aid digestion in their gizzards, but none of the thousands of fossil birds in the same group as Chromeornis had been found with such a large number of stones.
The researchers, led by Field Museum curator Jingmai O'Connor, explored various hypotheses. They compared the stones' volume, quantity, and size to those found in other fossilized birds, and conducted a CT scan for further insight. The results confirmed the presence of over 800 tiny stones, some resembling clay balls, in the bird's throat. These stones, O'Connor explained, were not aiding digestion but rather causing the bird's demise.
The team proposed another theory: the bird could have been sick. When birds fall ill, they may engage in unusual behaviors, such as swallowing excessive stones and attempting to regurgitate them. However, the large mass of stones became lodged in the esophagus, leading to suffocation. This hypothesis remains a subject of ongoing research and interpretation, as paleontological findings can vary in interpretation.
The story of Chromeornis highlights the fragility of prehistoric life. Birds like Chromeornis, belonging to a group that thrived during the dinosaur era, faced extinction when an asteroid collision occurred around 66 million years ago.
